Gift cards are great — you can buy what you want with them and they are fun to spend because it isn't your money. But, if you lose them it’s very upsetting. Many companies will resend a lost gift card, as long as you have the information on the card.

According to a New York Times article, an estimated $5 billion in gift card money will go unspent this year.

Orggit’s Wallet section is perfect for storing all of your gift cards. Here are some steps you can take to protect the money left on your gift cards.

Photocopy All Gift Card Receipts when Possible
This can go a lot way toward helping the store reissue a gift card. The issuer can look at their store records to ascertain the gift card number, value remaining and purchase date. Sometimes, however, it isn’t possible to get a receipt, especially if you received the card as a gift.

Store all Gift Card Information
Even if you don’t have a receipt, many companies will reissue cards if you have the card number. Be sure to copy not only the card number, but any security codes as well. Also, it’s helpful to keep the customer support number with the card so it’s easy to call the company if need be.

Register Your Gift Card
Many companies, such as American Express, allow you to call and register your gift card in case of loss or theft. You should look on the back of all cards and do this as soon as you receive them if this is offered. Even if you can do this, you should still store your gift card information somewhere.

Following these steps will ensure that your gift card money doesn’t join the $5 billion in unclaimed cash. Orggit is the best place for all your gift cards, credit cards and anything else you keep in your wallet.
