Being deployed for military service is a stressful enough event for an entire family without even considering the ramifications at home. After the initial anxiety wears off, families with members in the military should ensure all of the soldier’s paperwork and legal documents are in order before they leave for their service overseas. Here’s a quick list of things you’ll want to make sure are in order.
Financial Accounts and Obligations
Even though you may be shipped overseas, your bills and financial obligations will continue at home. And while you may not have access to handle these affairs, you should be sure that someone will take care of these matters. By giving your family (or a designated family member) access to your financial, utility, and other personal accounts, you’ll feel better knowing that all matters can be taken care of.
Legal Documents
While you probably don’t want to dwell on having a will or your Powers of Attorney set up, this is a crucial matter to address before being deployed. Ensure that you have an updated will, and that your possible next of kin know where this is located (and can have access to it). Additionally, let your family know who is the Power of Attorney, and be sure that the proper documentation is stored and easily accessible when needed.
Insurance
Be sure that all of your insurance is up to date, less it’s canceled while you’re overseas. Contact your insurance agent and ask how to best handle your insurance while you’re deployed. Often, you’ll be able to get a lower rate.
Overall, you want to make sure that you tie up all loose ends before you’re deployed. It’s going to be a stressful situation for everyone in your family. However, properly preparing for all unexpected events will help to alleviate some of the stress.
